Romany Gypsy
I met George and Charlie with their small flock of chickens, two dogs, two aviaries and their wagon, chilling out by the roaring fire with a cooking pot hung on their hand made tripod.
Life is simple, relaxed and content. Hundreds of years ago their ancestors started their journey from India, and travelled across the Middle East and to Europe where now very few true Romany Gypsies exist.
George was born in a wagon and ever since he has travelled up and down the country, going back to previous campsites. Over the years George has become a well-known character and he feels welcomed by the villagers where he usually camps. Farmers he has become acquainted with provide him with wood and water.
Chickens nest nearby and provide company and freshly laid eggs. Combined with game, fresh fruits and vegetables available in season locally, the true Romany diet is far better balanced than that of an average person.
George’s wagon has many photographs of his grandparents, parents and other relatives nestled among its lovely wood panelling. During winter his wagon is kept warm by the coal-fired central heating. George's knife sharpening service is well known up and down his route, and his hand crafted willow pegs and walking sticks contribute to much needed essentials, and compliment other traditional incomes such as from crystal readings, tea cups and fortune telling. The fascinating artefacts and lucky charms in the wagon left me mesmerised.
